Improving product design and manufacturing productivity is imperative in today’s competitive marketplace. As the complexity of products have increased substantially, so have the complexity of parts which must be manufactured. The ability to effectively and efficiently design and manufacture these parts is no simple task.

The ‘manufacturability’ of a part drastically impacts production costs. Rework leads to more scrap product and, of course, potential significant cost overruns. This rework not only costs time and money, but it ‘costs’ manpower and can directly limit innovative thinking.

The later in the product cycle that a problem is found, the more expensive the resulting design change will be. Similarly, design changes made during the build and design testing phase cost money and resources. Addressing issues at an early stage allows one to reduce rework by avoiding late design changes, and enables more standardization.

To address this challenge, manufacturers need to :

• Validate upstream manufacturability, identifying design areas that are difficult, expensive or impossible to manufacture
• Automate and formalize the design review process for manufacturability
• Provide a mechanism for best practice knowledge capture and re-use for continuous improvement
• Reduce rework cost
